How long does a CIFAS marker last?

Most markers stay on file for six years. But they can be removed sooner — and the six-year clock can be reset.

Most CIFAS markers stay on record for six years from the date they were filed. First-party fraud markers stay for six years and cannot ordinarily be shortened.

The bank that filed the marker can remove it at any time if new information comes to light — this is the route we use in most successful challenges.

A common misconception is that ignoring the marker will let it 'age out' quietly. In fact, further applications during the marker period can trigger fresh markers, resetting the clock.
